Discover Hanstein Castle
One of Germany's most beautiful castle ruins
Tucked away in central Germany on/near the former border of the East and West lies a ruined 14th century stone castle. This castle is called Hanstein Castle and is considered one of the most beautiful castle ruins in Germany. Despite the beauty, there is still an undiscovered mystique surrounding the premise and you can tour the castle almost entirely isolated from crowds.
As for a brief history, the first mentioning of Hanstein castle dates back to 1070 AD, and the rebuilding of wood to the current stone fortress took place around 1308 by the von Hanstein family. During the time of the Cold War, the castle was taken over by Russian troops as a lookout because of the strategic location, high on a hill overlooking the border, which led to further destruction of the castle. Presumably, the Russians had other preoccupations than preserving a historical site. ^Insert irony here^ Currently, Burg Hanstein is open to the public to visit and the nominal admission fee helps with the ongoing restoration. A huge plus since the castle has actually seen a noticeable improvement throughout the years!
Starting our journey in Hanau and cruising down the A7 Autobahn, Burg Hanstein is about 2 hours from Frankfurt/Hanau. This makes a doable castle day trip from Frankfurt, yes it is slightly out of the way but if you have a free day this is an unexpected off the beaten track adventure.
Castles are best discovered in the fall, there is something magical about the colors and the eerie mist that just transports you to another time. Upon arrival to Bornhagen, the town, become taken aback by the quintessential German storybook charm. White and wooden houses with red sloped roofs. Basically how one imagines a small German countryside town to look with an impressively large castle looming in the background. When finally pulling up to the castle become awe struck at the entirety of the size, pictures do not to it justice! The history and the size are magnificent proof of what humans can accomplish.
Hanstein is situated on top of a hill, surrounded by a blanket of autumnal forest. Within the forest, you can see a deep line of division. A leftover forest scar reminding of Germany's and the castle's past.
One of the best parts about the castle experience is the freedom to climb around and discover all the various nooks and crannies. From the climbing up the lookout tower and gazing down to the forest, to going down to the torture chamber and seeing some midevial stretching devices!
So if you are looking for a historically enriching day trip add Burg Hanstein to your list. You will not disappointed by this hidden gem.
