Devilish Cordon Bleu & Twilight Strolls- A Lucerne Love Story at Zunfthausrestaurant Pfistern

Where else to celebrate?

Picturing romantic cities conjures up an assortment of images depending on who is asked. Yet Lucerne, dear Lucerne, this one tops the list. Now Paris, sure the attention is there, universally known as the city of love, but is this title justified? Does the overarching romance of the city enthrall and enliven the inhabitants no matter how temporary? I beg to differ and introduce Lucerne to the mix, because who doesn't love a little controversy and some friendly competition.

Surrounded in a hug of mountains and nestled upon a crystal clear lake this storybook city is inviting yet approachable. Stunning pastel architecture with Hershey Kisses topping churches. At just under 100,000 inhabitants, the stage is set for an intimate encounter with the Swiss mistress.

Naturally beautiful, effortlessly stunning, yet all the while still humble.

Crisp mountain air refreshes the lungs while swans gracefully float by as you begin to stroll around the city. As if the entire town is a personal romantic playground for the senses. If that isn't enough for the still unconvinced need I mention Swiss chocolate.

Undoubtedly Lucerne was chosen for our anniversary dinner. The restaurant of choice, Zunfthausrestaurant Pfistern.  Now that's a mouthful. Don't ask how to pronounce it, just go.

Located in the center of Lucerne's old town previously occupied by the baker's guild in 1578, for the "noble gentleman." According to their menu and website, the building was a meeting point of business and politics back in the day. Eagerly awaiting a nice meal becomes even more enhanced upon discovery that the building you're in, overlooking the river and a medieval bridge, is more historic than your home county.

Upon being seated in a corner alcove in the upstairs part away from the smell of fondue and melting Swiss cheeses, the artwork in the restaurant was immediately noticed. Gilded pretzels artfully placed over a green backdrop made one wonder if those were baked goods or abstract sculptures. To the left was the setting sun and a world class view of old town Lucerne. After immersing in the visual realm came the challenging decision of selecting only one wine from the large menu. The first choice appeared, the taste was close but not there. Politely declining the first option the waitress was asked to bring a wine to compliment the Devilish Cordon Bleu ordered, she proudly smiled and offered their house white. With the wine sorted and the first course on the way our empty stomachs were itching with anticipation.
