Roof Work | Decision Time

Today was a day of decisions.

We either dreaded or delighted in the ringing of the doorbell.

Today the major roof portion seems to be winding to a close, thus beginning the more complex detail-oriented portion of the roof project, the flat roofs.

We came to the conclusion the home was more elegant before her 1920s modernization remodel. They decided to enter the first era of less long-term thinking and put up flat roof portions atop the house.

These details are crucial right now. Our decisions will affect the longevity as well as the aesthetic of the home. Last week we had the spur-of-the-moment decision to place “Copper Penny” colored flashings along the top edge. I had 10 min quickly outside to flip through the color sample ring, then ponder which colors I have in mind for the future of the house, definitely not the current green & red! Think about the roof color, what would match, what will look good long term, etc.

Well, today was decisions about water management. How do we want the drain pipes to direct out of the house? What materials do we want? Do we want fun designs? Will a gutter take away from the historical component or is it better to manage water for the sake of beauty? Can we make a gutter beautiful? What color flashing do we want on the balcony? How far do we want the rubber to go up the side of the balcony? If lower what color metal do we use?

As you can see many questions.

I love the puzzle of the house. Hopefully, the vision in my head is selecting the right components. Thinking about as many factors as I can envision and foresee. As well as taking input from Luis, our project manager expert. Who is taking the time to think along with us. It is wonderful to have contractors include you in the discussions, plan along with you, fix extra aspects of the house, and not just rush to complete things in haste. It is nice to have this collaboration.

There are also some surprises we have in store for some extra pizazz to the house. We felt like leveling her up to a more elevated elegant standing. We are going to add some more accessories to her that fit her style, and in addition will be made by local artisans, rather than factory mass-produced plastic (may I say) garbage.

Today we celebrated with some tequila after weeks of hard work in the 90s (30s) for the roof, and to thank our considerate hard-working team.
